Our director of human services Heather Vaughan appeared on WJXT’s River City Live yesterday to give some tips on the best types of food to donate to your local food bank, pantry, or feeding program. She had some good tips, such as thinking about low-sodium and low-cholesterol canned goods, and easy-open, single serve containers for seniors, kids and homeless folks. Of course, you should always check expiration dates, and non-breakable containers are preferred.
At LSS, our food pantry serves the community at large, so we see large families as well as singles of all ages. Some of our other programs, like Serving Our Seniors or the child-focused Backpack program, provide food to a specific audience with specific needs. So we can generally use a wide variety of shelf-stable foods in all sizes.
If you have food to donate, THANK YOU! You can bring it to our offices any day between 9 am and 5 pm. If you’d like to hold a food drive at your office, congregation, or community group, THANK YOU! Give us a call at 904-448-5995 and we’ll get you all set up.
