As SHE Women's Support Group at Lutheran Social Services of Northeast Florida (LSS) commemorates its one-year anniversary during Women’s History Month, LSS announces the launch of free conversational English classes for refugee women and the community in Jacksonville. Since its inception on March 10, 2023, SHE has served as a beacon of hope and empowerment for refugee women in the community.
SHE, which stands for Social, Healing, and Empowerment, operates under the umbrella of the Preferred Communities program within LSS Refugee Services. This initiative is dedicated to supporting refugee women in the Jacksonville community through various activities aimed at fostering personal growth and resilience.
In celebration of its first anniversary, the SHE team is excited to introduce "Coffee, Tea, and English" weekly classes to be hosted at LSS and St. Luke's Episcopal Church starting this March. These classes will provide refugee women with the opportunity to enhance their English language skills in a supportive and inclusive environment, empowering them to build sustainable life skills crucial for their resettlement in the U.S.
Throughout the past year, SHE has been instrumental in providing refugee women with monthly sessions as safe havens, venturing into entrepreneurship through the creation and selling of crafts, and organizing enriching field trips.
The success of SHE's initiatives is evident in the recognition received by the women's crafts at local markets and Cultivate Jax, an eco-conscious, handmade item store in Jacksonville, where their items have been sold.
SHE is an initiative provided by the Preferred Communities program at LSS, which offers intensive case management to the most vulnerable refugees.
