Summer Meals & Food: Resources for Jacksonville children and families



As summer begins and school meals become unavailable, some families in Jacksonville face the challenge of keeping their children well-fed. Thankfully, there are several initiatives throughout the city dedicated to providing nutritious food to those in need during these months. Here's a comprehensive guide to some of the resources available to support families and children this summer.


1. Food Pantry at Lutheran Social Services of Northeast Florida:

Lutheran Social Services of Northeast Florida (LSS) offers a food pantry open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to noon, providing essential groceries to families in need. With summer here, we expect an increase in visits and are ready to help. Visit lssjax.org/food to learn more.

2. Free Summer Lunch at the Library for Kids and Teens:

From June 10 through August 2, 2024, the Jacksonville Public Library is offering free and nutritious meals to children and teens (18 and younger) at multiple locations across the city. No sign-up or application is necessary; kids can simply show up during meal times to receive a healthy meal. This program not only provides essential nutrition but also offers children the opportunity to participate in summer reading programs, crafts, and other fun activities.

  • Highlands Regional Library: 1826 Dunn Ave., Monday - Friday, 1 - 2 p.m.

  • Charles Webb Wesconnett Regional Library: 6887 103rd St., Monday - Friday, 1 - 2 p.m.


Note: No meals will be provided on July 4 in observance of Juneteenth and Independence Day.



3. Summer BreakSpot:

Summer BreakSpot ensures that kids and teens up to 18 years old have access to free meals all summer long. The program offers balanced breakfasts, lunches, snacks, or dinners depending on the site. Locations can include churches, schools, libraries, and more.


How to Find a Site Near You:
  • View Interactive Map: Use the map feature on the Summer BreakSpot website. Enter your address or zip code to find the closest meal site.

  • Dial 2-1-1: For immediate assistance and information about meal sites in your area.

  • Text “FOOD” or “COMIDA” to 304-304: Get a list of nearby Summer BreakSpot sites sent directly to your phone.

4. Feeding Northeast Florida:

Feeding Northeast Florida operates mobile food pantries and distributes meals at various locations across the city. They provide fresh produce, protein, and other essential items to help families maintain a balanced diet during the summer months.

5. The Salvation Army:

The Salvation Army in Jacksonville offers meal programs and food pantry services throughout the year. They are a reliable source of support, providing nutritious meals and other essentials to families in need.

6. United Way of Northeast Florida:

7. Backpack Feeding Program:

Throughout the school year, Lutheran Social Services partners with local schools to provide our backpack feeding program. This initiative ensures that children have enough to eat over the weekends by providing bags of food to take home. Although the program pauses during the summer, our food pantry continues to support families with ongoing needs.
