Sometimes one small change has unintended consequences. Recently, our Nourishment Network food pantry has seen the ripple effects of a change that the Florida Department of Children and Families made to the distribution schedule for SNAP benefits, commonly known as food stamps. The new schedule goes into effect in March, but to prepare for the change, families had their February benefits split in half, receiving half of the monthly amount early in the month, and the remaining half later. The amount of the distribution didn’t change, but the change still had a significant impact on their food supply for the month.
As a result, our pantry served twice as many people in the first week of February than usual. Nourishment Network coordinator Jason Clark spoke to First Coast News and News4Jax yesterday to raise up the issue and ask the community for help re-stocking our shelves for the rest of the month.
